Danni Menzies from APITS shares mental health journey

A Place in the Sun's Danni Menzies has opened up on struggles she is still facing a year after being in a horrific accident. Last January, the Channel 4 host shared that she was undergoing treatment following a crash as she shared graphic images of the aftermath.

At the time, Danni said that she was "unrecognisable" after being in the accident. She later explained that she had been "taken out" by a stolen moped that lost control.

She took a break from social media, as she wrote: "Sooooo…. On Saturday I was taken out (on the pavement!) by a stolen moped that lost control. Didn’t see it coming and it’s not looking pretty right now tbh. I’m sure I will be fine in a few weeks but in the meantime I will be a wee bit quiet on here."

Posting to Instagram this week, the 36-year-old shared how the traumatic event had impacted her since. In a video, she said: "Life was feeling pretty good and I'd say I was in a great headspace. Little did I know, that was about to change."

The presenter shared some graphic images showing extensive cuts and bruises on her face, with one picture showing her in a head brace as she said: "Didn't see that one coming".

Danni explained that although her physical injuries healed, her mental health spiralled. She said: "Once the concussion wore off and my face started to heal, my mental health got really bad.

"I've experienced bad mental health in my early 20s so I knew something I had to do was get my body moving because when your headspace isn't great you have to focus on the controllables."

The property expert told of how she signed up to more gym classes and went on walks to help heal her mind.

She added: "Honestly, moving my body and speaking to someone regularly kept me afloat. Of course it wasn't all smooth sailing but exercise is free medicine, so if you're struggling and you can move then get out there and do it. I promise it will help sooner or later."

Some of Danni's 131,000 Instagram followers flooded her with support as they branded her "inspirational". One user told of their own health battle as they said: "Glad you got through this horrific accident and continue to do so,my friends and family got me through my cancer, it’s good to have fab support."

Another added: "Inspirational effort. Proud of you." Meanwhile a third penned: "Great to see Dani. You are doing great! Keep going."
