Royals: King Charles goes on impromptu walkabout

King Charles was seen beaming at the Royal Opera House last week - and this was a "reassuring" sight for the public, according to an analyst.

Charles attended a special gala performance to honour the outgoing music director Sir Antonio Pappanno on Thursday. Following the performance, the monarch took to the stage to wave to the audience, who gave him a standing ovation.

Brittani Barger, co-founder of Royal News, says of the event: “I think the video shows he is definitely in good spirits as his treatment continues, which is reassuring for the people.

“I think the public is happy to see their monarch out and about again."

“There was genuine concern when it was revealed he had cancer and was undergoing treatment.”

The King's cancer treatment is still ongoing, but he has been deemed well enough to return to work and resume his public-facing duties.

Charles is known to have a strong work ethic and enjoy interacting with the public. He engages with well-wishers on a regular basis, like at Sandringham during walks to church or outside Buckingham Palace.

Ms Barger has a feeling the king has been missing that part of his role, saying: “He had to spend so much time behind closed doors and as one of the hardest working royals for years, that can't have been easy for him.

“The king looked thrilled to be at the Royal Opera House.”

And, it’s not just the king who is happy to be back at full force, according to Ms Barger, the public is just as happy to see his return.

She added: “I think this reception (standing ovation) shows how the people are happy he's well enough to attend the event and that he is in good spirits.

“But now that his treatment is going well, he's able to be out and about and undertake some of the engagements he undertook before.
