Fire crews are searching for a light aircraft after reports it got into difficulty over Kent.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service says it is looking for the aircraft alongside police and amulance teams in in Charing, near Ashford.

Five fire engines are at the scene and locals have been warned to avoid the area during the search.

Drones are being used by search teams to scour woodlands in order to try to find the aircraft.

A spokesman for Kent Fire & Rescue Service said "Kent Fire and Rescue Service is involved in a search for a light aircraft, after reports it was in difficulty, in Charing, near Ashford.

"Five fire engines are in attendance, as well as a technical rescue team, with crews using drones to scour an area of woodland off Pluckley Road. Kent Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service are also there.

"People are advised to avoid the area while the search continues. Please share this information with loved ones in the affected area who may not have access to the internet."

Update: Fire crews have as of 6.45pm suspended the search for a light aircraft, after extensive searches did not find anything.

A spokesperson for the service said: "No aircraft has been found following a thorough search in Charing, and crews are standing down. People are no longer advised to avoid the area."
