The world’s 20 most beautiful countries are named - only 5 beat UK

The UK beat the likes of India, Indonesia, Norway and the USA to come sixth on the list of most beautiful countries in the world.

One of the best things about the advent of the aircraft has been the opportunities it is has given people to travel around the world in just a matter of hours.

As technology has developed, it has also given people more opportunities to assess which country is the most aesthetically pleasing and why.

However, deciding which can be a contentious issue as each nation will have its own design merits and each one will have certain styles that appeal to others.

Despite the bevvy of variabilities, Rough Guides has attempted to decide which country is the most beautiful by casting a vote among its readers.

The result is a list of the 20 most beautiful countries in the world, a list in which the UK is only beaten by five others as it breaks into the top six and beats the likes of Norway, India, the USA and Greece.

Mount Fuji

Coming in at 20th on the list is Japan. A country with just over 125m people living on its shores, it is best known for its technological excellence, flowering cherry trees, and the epic Mount Fuji pictured above. Its capital, Tokyo, is also the largest city in the world with a population of around 14m.

Slovenia, Europe, has a much smaller population than Japan, but it still beats the country into 19th spot. Situated near iconic European neighbour Austria, the country is best known for its stunning natural scenery featuring a series of epic natural caves.

Old Porto city, buildings in Ribeira, Douro river, Portugal

Portugal comes 18th on this list. While it is the birthplace of footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, the country has become a holiday hub for British tourists travelling to Europe. Lisbon and Porto are two of the highlights alongside local Fado music and Pasteis de Nata, a form of custard tart.

Thousand Islands,Nusa Penida Island, Indonesia, Bali

Located in south east Asia and the 17th most beautiful country in the world, Indonesia is a mecca for tourism for beautiful islands situated on the equator. Like others on this list, it has been praised for its natural beauty. Examples of this include Sanur Beach Nusa Penida Island (pictured above), Mount Rinjani, and its Borobudur temples.

Taj Mahal at golden light of sunset

India is home to over one billion people, making it one of the largest and most densely populated countries in the world. It is best known architecturally speaking for the Taj Mahal, but is about so much more than that being as it is the home of Bollywood, a multitude of festivals and some of the best food in the world. The country places 16th on Rough Guide's list.
